Weekends and shifts are common for mechanics. There are premium rates for Saturdays, which are 150% of base, Sundays are 200% (double-time), and public holidays are 250%.

For example, with a typical Sunday, a $24.28 base rate becomes $48.56/hr.

Extra time (beyond regular hours) gets paid at 150% or more. If you work in a busy shop, these penalties can add up.

Apprentices progress through a fixed wage scale.

According to MIGAS, first-year adult apprentices make $854 a week, rising to $51K a year by the 4th year.

These are much lower wages than those of a fully qualified mechanic. After finishing an apprenticeship, mechanics become tradespeople.

Standard workshops don’t pay bonuses or piecework pay regularly, but some employers do (for selling parts/accessories, for example).

In addition to this, many companies give allowances: tool allowances (about 1.5K a year, tax-free) and uniform allowances. If you’re sent on-site, you may also get overtime travel or meal allowances.

Casual mechanics get 25% extra on their base wage instead of leave. That means a casual at $28 gets paid $35/hour (but no paid leave).

Earn more money by doing side jobs (weekends or evenings) like mobile mechanic work on farms, fleets or RVs. Earnings can go up significantly when you work as a mobile mechanic (often $50–70/hr plus travel).

If you can regularly work overtime, the extra pay (1.5–2.5×) effectively boosts your hourly rate. Even one or two Saturdays a month at time-and-a-half can add several thousand per year.

Australian employers must pay super at least 11% (2025–26 rate) of your ordinary time earnings into a complying fund. A salary package including super is ~10% higher than cash pay. Some workshops allow salary sacrifice into super (or novated car leases) to reduce taxable income.
